Major Retrospective on Daido Moriyama Is Now on View in Tokyo
Featuring the seminal Japanese photographer’s latest color and monochrome works.
The Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Japan is currently hosting a large-scale survey on seminal Japanese photographer, Daido Moriyama. Recognized for his confrontational street snapshots and grainy compositions, Moriyama’s prolific practice centers upon diaristic experiences of wandering through city streets across the globe for the past five decades. His latest show revolves around the theme of “ongoing” with the artist showcasing new color and monochrome works portraying some of his most visited locations in Tokyo.
Coinciding with the exhibition is hardcover catalog that features all of Moriyama’s works on display including his recurring Record series, Pretty Woman (2007), and Tokyo Boogie Woogie (2018). Visual spreads are also accompanied with essays by writerAkiko Otake and photo critic Yoshiaki Kai that offer insights into Moriyama’s influential photographic practice. All texts in the book include English and Japanese translations.
“Known as a master of snapshots, Moriyama Daido, one of Japan’s preeminent photographers, began his career in the 1960s. His grainy, high-contrast style, which came to be described as ‘are, bure, boke’ (rough, blurry, out of focus), sent shockwaves through the photography world,” said the museum in a statement.
