Central Saint Martins Students Captured in Intimate Portrait Series

Photos depicting the next generation of creatives from London’s top fashion and art school.

Central Saint Martins — the London college known for birthing several of fashion’s most recognizable names including Alexander McQueen, Burberry’s Ricardo Tisci, and Grace Wales Bonner to name a few — continues to foster creativity with its next generation of creatives helming an ambitious portrait project. Although the coronavirus pandemic has halted its graduation celebrations, a number of CSM’s class of 2020 have organized to develop an immense collection of portraits spotlighting everyday students, teachers, as well as alumni to display the school’s diversity.

“We hope that you, the reader, will look at these canny individuals with a willingness to explore what identity can mean at its most vocal, but also at its most exposed and honest. Glaring back at you will be poise and charm, as well as the dazed and expectant look of someone who has been stopped for a photograph in the middle of a busy day,” said CSM student, Francesco Oneto.

The ongoing project was organized by former Saint Martins photography student, Balint Alovits. There is currently 300 portraits in the collection and most can be seen on the Instagram account, @thats_so_csm. “The idea formed in my mind during my second year at Central Saint Martins, around April last year. As an MA Photography student, I wanted to create a body of work that was specific to CSM. My initial idea was to shoot deserted classrooms as we were approaching the end of the semester,” said Alovits to The Love Magazine UK.
