Olafur Eliasson Creates First Augmented Reality Artwork in Quarantine

‘WUNDERKAMMER’ will reach communities all over the world.

Olafur Eliasson is a master at eliciting awe and curiosity with his dynamic work that straddles perception, architecture, and climate change. He’s known for his conceptual sculptures and large-scale installations that feature a number of elemental materials including light, water, and air to elevate the experiences of onlookers. Following his interactive social media project for Earth Day 2020, Olafur Eliasson now unveils his first-ever augmented reality (AR) project called WUNDERKAMMER that will reach communities all over the world.

The series is comprised of AR artworks that evoke natural elements such as a glowing sun, a shimmering rainbow, and a cloud that emits rain. The virtual project also sheds light on endangered animals as well as objects we take for granted such as the compass. These works are available for audiences to collect digitally and use in the comfort of their homes.

“Olafur, an artist who has always encouraged viewers to engage with climate change and the environment is inviting audiences to bring the outside in, and to create their own environment by adding AR objects and atmospheres to their personal space,” as per a press statement.

All of the works will be available for free, test out the AR artworks yourself by downloading the Acute Art app and learn more by visiting Olafur Eliasson’s website. A collector’s edition will be released at a later date.
