Kaoru Sato's Retro Illustrations to Take Over OMOTESANDO ROCKET

The Japanese illustrator’s latest sun-drenched scenes.

Yasushi Fujimoto’s OMOTESANDO ROCKET gallery is presenting the works of up-and-coming Japanese illustrator Kaoru Sato in “Day Light Avenue.” The exhibited artwork features vintage cars and color-blocked scenes, evoking a sense of American nostalgia.

For his latest exhibition, Sato depicts retro landmarks like American restaurant chain Mel’s Drive-In and Oasis Motel. Mid-century modernist buildings are drenched in the sun, while palm trees cast shadows in the distance. The backgrounds are abstracted so that no distinct features characterize the landscapes. Rather, each scene focuses on the value placed on culturally significant items, revealing the artist’s distinct world view.

Apple iPad works, original T-shirts and other goods will be sold at the venue, as well as on OMOTESANDO ROCKET’s online shop. Check out select works from “Day Light Avenue” in the slideshow above and expect the exhibition to run from June 4 to June 10.

In other news, Perrotin is displaying the works of Jean-Philippe Delhomme in an online exhibition called “Los Angeles Language.”
