Jean Philippe Delhomme Translates "Los Angeles Language" in New Landscape Paintings

Exploring the wonder of fleeting moments.

Although Perrotin’s international galleries are closed due to COVID-19, the renowned art dealer’s Paris outpost is hosting a virtual exhibition of new paintings by Jean-Philippe Delhomme. Titled “Los Angeles Language,” the online presentation features roughly 50 miniature oil paintings based on photographs taken by the French artist during his prolonged visit at the West Coast city.

From a car repair garage to a McDonald’s restaurant, Delhomme’s new landscapes under “Los Angeles Language” capture “the wonder of fleeting moments perceived in passing,” expressed the gallery in a statement. “Indeed, Los Angeles is a city that we discover from the point of view of a car: we walk very little there, instead taking the freeways to go from Santa Monica to Silver Lake or from Bel Air to Downtown.”

Delhomme often paints scenes devoid of human subjects as a way for viewers to focus more on the urban environments he paints such as New York, Paris, and Los Angeles. The artist also has an affinity for creating minimalist illustrations with insightful one-liners. His recent book Artists’ Instagrams: The Never Seen Instagrams of the Greatest Artists, Delhomme imagines what the masters of modern art would have shared if they had access to social media platforms.

Check out select works from “Los Angeles Language” in the slideshow above and then visit Perrotin’s website for more details. The exhibition is on virtual view until August 14.

Elsewhere in art, Sotheby’s will auction a collection of exemplary works by pioneering female modernists, such as Louise Bourgeois, Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell and Helen Frankenthaler.
