Hashimoto Contemporary Displays Works Made During Pandemic in Group Exhibition

An insight into how artists are reacting to COVID-19.

San Francisco’s Hashimoto Contemporary gallery has launched its “Friends & Family” group exhibition of new and recent works on paper from artists in their network. Each work on display was made during the coronavirus pandemic, providing insight into how artists create works on paper when prompted. Participating artists include Chicago-based artist David Heo, LA-based illustrator Celia Jacobs and San Francisco’s own Alex Ziv, among others.

“Friends & Family” showcases a variety of reactions and responses to how people are facing the changes to daily life and managing working in quarantine during a global pandemic. Jacobs’ Green Cave features a person peacefully resting in the water as the sun sets, while artists like Gina M. Contreras and Hilda Palafox focus on the feminine figure. In contrast, others artists evoke fear with their images: Ziv illustrates four scorpions on a turquoise background, whereas Heo depicts ferocious dogs fighting for a ball in Crave.

Check out select works from “Friends & Family” above and below. The exhibition is running from now until May 30.

In other news, Boston’s Shelter In Place gallery has been mounting tiny exhibitions of brand-new works over the past month.
