Grimes Puts a Piece of Her Own Soul on Sale
It was originally valued at $10 million USD.

Grimes opens her first-ever art show today, with a duo of online exhibitions showcasing prints, drawings, photographs and other works by the singer and musician, whose real name is Claire Boucher.
Most sensationally, the exhibition includes a work that allows members of the public to purchase a percentage of her soul. The piece, titled Selling Out, is a legal document made in collaboration with the artist’s lawyers.
According to Bloomberg, Grimes originally planned to sell the work for $10 million USD. “I didn’t want anyone to buy it,” the artist said. “So, I said we should make it $10 million and then it probably won’t sell.” However, given the global recessions threatened by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, she felt that the asking price was inappropriate: “with the current state of the world, do you want to put something up for $10 million?”
The piece will now be listed with a price of ‘best offer’, allowing the exhibition’s viewers to decide its value.
The exhibition will be hosted by Gallery Platform Los Angeles from May 28 through June 3, and at Maccarone Los Angeles from May 28 through August 31.
After causing a media sensation by naming her child X Æ A-12, the artist recently announced that she and Elon Musk have changed the name to X Æ A-Xii – reportedly in order to comply with California’s birth registration handbook.
