Works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring & More Dominate Frieze’s First Online Edition
Some of the most expensive works at the virtual art fair.

In response to COVID-19 lockdown measures, Frieze opted to launch a virtual fair of its New York Edition. Running until May 15, the online installment invites anyone with Internet access to explore the collections of over 200 international galleries through a series of online viewing rooms supervised by the dealers themselves.
The online viewing rooms are “about getting everyone through this time and making sure everybody comes out the other side in good shape,” said Victoria Siddall, Frieze’s global director, in a press statement. Siddall went on to mention that the virtual platform was initially meant to be an additional tool for dealers to connect with clients, instead of a complete replacement for the physical fair.
Following the online version of Art Basel Hong Kong in March, Frieze New York’s online viewing rooms are also revealing prices for artworks on offer including the functionality to filter by price range and the artist’s gender. Normally, these prices are kept secret. Of the works on show, there are a total of 32 pieces that are listed in the one million-and-up mark with 1,500 in the under $10,000 sector.
Acquavella Galleries is selling some of the most expensive works at the fair including a 1982 acrylic and oil stick on canvas work by Jean-Michel Basquiat priced at $5.5 million USD. A 1982 Untitled work by Keith Haring that features the late’s artists signature bold brushstrokes is also up for grabs at the gallery’s online viewing room for $3.2 million USD. Moreover, Hauser & Wirth is purveying a highly-sought-after drawing by George Condo for $2 million USD — the work comes from the artist’s series of isolation drawings that were unveiled by the gallery last month.
