David Shrigley Unveils "Lockdown Drawings" to Help Get You Through Quarantine

Black and white illustrations featuring humorous subjects and text.

Following his Ruinart residency in France, David Shrigley now unveils a series of “Lockdown Drawings” as part of an online exhibition with Anton Kern Gallery. With the coronavirus pandemic and its drain of bleak news, Shrigley serves to drive out stress with these lighthearted, satirical works on paper featuring a wide range of subjects and social commentary.

One of the highlighted drawings features a subject laying in bed with the text: “My intention is to sleep through the crisis” above the composition. Another work portrays photographer armed with a Polaroid camera with a handwritten statement that reads: “I photograph stupid people. I will have an exhibition of the photographs. It will be called ‘stupid people.’”

Shrigley’s signature drawing style combines handwritten humorous text with child-like imagery of animals, people, creatures, and still lifes of the everyday mundane. Beyond drawing, Shrigley also creates large-scale installations and sculptures that are inspired by his whimsical illustrations alongside books, videos, photography, and more.

Check out select works from “Lockdown Drawings” in the slideshow above and visit Anton Kern Gallery’s website to view more artworks.

Elsewhere in art, Daniel Arsham and Pokémon are set to launch their ”Relics of Kanto Through Time” exhibition at Tokyo’s NANZUKA gallery.
