Daniel Arsham's Pokémon-Inspired Sculptures Exclusive First Look (UPDATE)

As part of the artist’s upcoming “Relics of Kanto Through Time” exhibition.

UPDATE (May 28, 2020): NANZUKA recently gave HYPEBEAST an exclusive first look at Daniel Arsham‘s Pokémon-inspired sculptures as part of the “Relics of Kanto Through Time” exhibition. From an eroded Porygon statue to a decayed Charizard card artwork, the artist unveils his Fictional Archaeology interpretations on a number of recognizable pocket monsters from the popular Japanese franchise.

Check out the sculptures in the Instagram post below.

ORIGINAL STORY (May 27, 2020): Last month, Daniel Arsham unveiled two distinct collaborations with The Pokémon Company: an apparel collection with UNIQLO UT and ERODED PIKACHU sculptures in the artist’s Archive Editions platform. Now, the internationally-renowned artist is teaming up once again with the popular Japanese media franchise to launch an exhibition hosted by Japan’s NANZUKA gallery.

Titled “Relics of Kanto Through Time,” the forthcoming presentation will ostensibly feature new cast sculptures of pocket monsters modeled after the original versions from the hit television series. The artist’s previously released ERODED PIKACHU served as a monument of Kanto uncovered through the passage of time. These art objects merge past, present and future in Arsham’s ongoing practice of fictitious archaeology.

“Relics of Kanto Through Time” will run through June 9 to July 4 at NANZUKA’s Tokyo gallery. In an effort to prevent and minimize the spread of coronavirus, the gallery is limiting attendance through online reservations that will be available starting May 31 on NANZUKA’s website.

In related news, Christie’s announced its first single-artist auction with Daniel Arsham.
