LACMA Catalog Traces Yoshitomo Nara's Decades-Spanning Career

Complete with 14 booklets that uncover the Japanese artist’s full range of works.

This past February, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art launched the first international retrospective of celebrated Japanese artist, Yoshitomo Nara. Although the presentation is temporarily closed due to COVID-19 lockdown measures, LACMA just released a special exhibition catalog that taps into Nara’s decades-spanning oeuvre reflected in the physical show.

From early, unseen sketches to prominent portraits created after the 2011 earthquake in Japan, the 224-page hardcover book offers an in-depth overview of the pieces displayed for the show while tracing Nara’s prolific career as an artist. The book abounds with over 240 visual spreads starring the artist’s unmissable, adolescent figures that are translated across paintings, installations, bronze sculptures and more. Essays highlighting the artist’s Western pop culture inspirations and influence on contemporary art are also featured in the book — written by acclaimed curator Mika Yoshitake and Michael Govan.

The limited edition book arrives in a clamshell case with 14 booklets. It’s also accompanied by a vinyl LP with original music and covers by one of Nara’s favorite American indie rock bands, Yo La Tengo. Purchase one now for $300 USD on LACMA’s official online shop.
