Watch Jeff Koons Discuss His Monumental 'Play-Doh' Sculpture

One of five unique versions.

Jeff Koons‘ 10-foot-tall Play-Doh sculpture made its debut as part of the artist’s retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art back in 2014. Play-Doh is part of Koons’ Celebration series, which the artist began in the ’90s, that features his iconic Balloon Dog, Hanging Heart and Tulips sculptures.

Christie’s relaunched a video of Koons discussing the towering, colorful piece inspired by the children’s’ toy. In the clip, the artist emphasized the meticulous fabrication behind the piece. It’s formed of 27 separate pieces of polychromed aluminum alongside micro-glass beads on several portions of the piece to give it a glow when the light hits it. “It’s not for perfectionism … but being able to engage the viewer,” says Koons.

The Play-Doh sculpture is one of five unique versions inspired by Koons’ son Ludwig who presented his father with a similar creation.
