Hauser & Wirth Announces Online Exhibition of George Condo Isolation Drawings

Titled “Drawings for Distanced Figures.”

Following on from its online exhibition of rare Louise Bourgeois drawings, Hauser & Wirth has announced a similar initiative with new work from George Condo. Titled “Drawings for Distanced Figures,” the online exhibition features a number of drawings by Condo that relate to his “Distanced Figures” painting series.

The drawings featured in the online exhibition were all made at Condo’s New York State home studio during the last week, referencing his experience of isolation and social distancing. Produced using crayon, pencil and ink, the images feature overlapping figures showcasing different emotions including fear, paranoia, claustrophobia, panic and distress. Despite the emotions displayed, the images aim to provide an antidote through beauty, elegance and resolve.

Speaking about the set of images, Condo described the figures as “distanced from one another, or in fact even distanced from themselves.” Condo also spoke about the current situation and his own isolation, explaining, “I love to draw and in the usual context of privacy, one doesn’t think of the term isolation or forced separation, rather it’s a space to create without being watched.”

George Condo’s “Drawings for Distanced Figures” will go on display via the Hauser & Wirth web site from April 3. The gallery will also donate 10% of all profits from sales of works in each of its online exhibitions to the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization.
