MCA Chicago Brings Duro Olowu's Multimedia Exhibition Online

The Nigerian-born, British designer has curated paintings, films and more.

MCA Chicago has extended its exhibition “Duro Olowu: Seeing Chicago” through the fall, opening up a virtual gallery in order for visitors to experience the installation despite coronavirus closures. Curated by Nigerian-born British designer Duro Olowu in the first of its kind partnership for the museum, the exhibition encompasses paintings, sculptures, photographs, and films in the context of his expressive and colorful fashion garments.

Olowu selected pieces from the expansive art collections (both public and private) throughout Chicago, highlighting works from Kerry James Marshall, Henri Matisse, Lorna Simpson and more. Throughout the virtual gallery tour, Olowu and MCA’s Senior Curator Naomi Beckwith share firsthand details on putting together the installation, interspersing their insight with quotes and interviews from the various esteemed artists represented.

Together the works present a layered view of Chicago as a leading, influential arts and culture hub. Through a wide range of pieces that hail from different historical periods, Olowu compares and contrasts the influence of the city on his own fashion designs.

The “Duro Olowu: Seeing Chicago” exhibition, which was originally scheduled to close in May, will be available online until September. Visit MCA Chicago’s website to check out the virtual gallery now.
