Virgil Abloh Will Bring His Massive "Figures of Speech" Exhibition to ICA Boston

Featuring a never-before-seen sculpture.

Following shows at Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Virgil Abloh will now bring his “Figures of Speech” retrospective to the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA). The landmark exhibition will feature an immersive space designed by Rem Koolhaas’s renowned architecture firm OMA*AMO. The presentation continues to shed light on Abloh’s interdisciplinary practice encompassing art, music, fashion, architecture, and design.

“We are so excited to welcome Virgil Abloh and his art, fashion, and explosive creativity to Boston. We are equally eager to welcome Abloh fans to the ICA and share the references, appropriations, and samplings from art, architecture, street and skatewear that Abloh deftly uses to redefine the 21st century culture and design,” said Jill Medvedow, the ICA’s Ellen Matilda Poss Director.

Welcoming visitors is Abloh’s 18-foot-long flag work titled PSA (2019) that features text expressing “QUESTION EVERYTHING” located in the museum’s elevator shaft. Altogether, the retrospective will take up five gallery rooms inside ICA Boston. Abloh will also display archival pieces from Hood By Air and Off-White™ collections to collaborative works with acclaimed artists such as Takashi Murakami and Futura. A total of 70 works will go on display with the addition of a never-before-seen sculpture to make its debut at the launch of the survey on July 4.
