Tal R Examines His Outsider Identity in Raw, Large-Scale Paintings

As part of the Israeli artist’s solo exhibition at Tim Van Laere Gallery.

Antwerp’s Tim Van Laere Gallery is showcasing Copenhagen-based artist Tal R’s work in a new solo exhibition. Entitled “Home Alone,” the exhibition features new large-scale paintings and works on paper that draw from art historical movements like expressionism, fauvism and symbolism. Working across a wide range of media, Tal R questions conceptions and presumptions surrounding today’s reality — what we’re seeing and where its meaning lies.

“Home Alone” is centered around the image of a bird in a cage. Referencing outsider art, Tal R depicts birds in an imperfect, almost childlike way. Saturated patches of color, textured surfaces and simplistic forms inform his work, from colorful depictions of various birds to black and white still lifes on paper. The artist transforms everything in his environment into art, taking inspiration from reality as well as his imagination. The artist’s self-identification as an outsider fuels his artistic landscapes, which offer both festive and sinister sensations.

Take a closer look at works from “Home Alone” in the slideshow above. The exhibition will launch on March 19 and run until May 9.

Elsewhere in art, Miami’s new Museum of Graffiti will showcase a diverse selection of large-format spray paint works by graffiti legend CES.
