LeRoy Neiman's Vibrant Painting of Kobe Bryant to Go on Display at Over the Influence

As part of a group exhibition showcasing the dynamism of popular contemporary art today.

Hong Kong’s Over the Influence gallery is spotlighting a selection of US-based artists in a group exhibition titled “Rise and Shine.” Reflective of some of the most exciting popular contemporary art today, the show features works by late American artist LeRoy Neiman, who is known for his brightly colored paintings and posters of athletes, sporting events and leisure activities.

A key piece of the exhibition is Neiman’s Knicks vs Lakers painting, which depicts a 2011 Knicks vs. Lakers game in vibrant hues. Featured prominently in the piece is Kobe Bryant jumping in mid air to steal the ball from Jeremy Lin. The work illustrates the acclaimed artist’s signature expressionist style, evoking a sense of dynamism and action. After the shocking death of Bryant back in January, the painting has newfound resonance as it captures his energetic spirit and enduring legacy.

Other featured artists in “Rise and Shine” include Andy Dixon, Aaron Johnson, Erik Parker and Gosha Levochkin. The “cheery collection” of paintings, sculptures and drawings showcase “a view of contemporary ideologies in bright hues and refreshing configurations,” as per a statement from the exhibition.

Elsewhere in art, Jeff Staple and Alasdair Thomson have immortalized the Nike SB Dunk Low “Pigeon” as a marble sculpture.
