KAWS Launches 'EXPANDED HOLIDAY' Augmented Reality Sculptures

Editions available for purchase on the new Acute Art app.

KAWS is no stranger to translating his signature artworks into the digital realm. The acclaimed Brooklyn-based artist launched a virtual reality experience with Visionaire to commemorate M&M’s 75th-anniversary event back in 2017. The artist now makes his foray into augmented reality via a ground-breaking new collaboration with AR and VR specialists, Acute Art.

Titled EXPANDED HOLIDAY, the AR-focused project encompasses a public exhibition alongside two editions. The presentation features 12 large-scale AR sculptures featuring KAWS’ signature companion — reminiscent of the 2012 Companion float for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade — that will be made available to fans across major cities and locations across the globe including Qatar, Hong Kong, London, New York, Tokyo, and more. It will run from March 12 until March 26.

As for the editions, the first installment is comprised of 25 AR sculptures (1.8m) that will be available to acquire exclusively though the Acute Art website for $10,000 USD each. Users will be able to place, capture and document the ubiquitous KAWS subject at varying locations using the app. They can also make their documentation private or public with the option to resell the edition too. The second rollout is an open edition consisting of AR sculptures in three unique colorways that will release in various timeframes. Users will only be able to keep the works for 24 hours or 10 days and share their experience on social media. Prices start at $6.99 USD for one sculpture for 24 hours.

“When I realized the quality that could be achieved and experienced in AR, I was immediately drawn to its potential. I have been creating objects and exhibiting works in public spaces throughout my career, and this allows me to expand on that in a whole new arena. The possibilities of locations and scale are endless, and I’m excited to start a new dialogue in this medium,” expressed KAWS.

The Acute Art App is available to download across iPhone, Android, Samsung and more devices. Visit AcuteArt.com for more information.
