Vincent Leroy Harnesses the Sun in New Monumental Sculpture

A rotating structure titled ‘The Sun Always Rises in the East.’

Placed in front of the new Kumming mall in China is a massive new sculpture by French artist Vincent Leroy made in collaboration with Debut Studio. Titled The Sun Always Rises in the East, the structure portrays a pixelated version of the sun that is comprised of transparent panels that attract light to create a dynamic blur effect. The abstract installation rotates slowly throughout the day and changes its appearance depending on the amount of sunlight it reflects.

“It is a sun of a new kind, totally reinterpreted — a pixelated sun seems to come straight from an ‘old school video game’ like a down resolution picture,” said the artist in a statement. “This installation attracts visitors with its reflection not only in the relationship with speed and distance but with reality – essential in today’s world, a search for the natural rhythm of its own internal harmony.”

Get a closer look at varying angles of the installation above and see it in action in the video below. Visit Vincent Leroy’s website to check out more innovative projects.

In case you missed it, the artist recently unveiled an otherworldly geodesic installation in Tokyo.
