Olafur Eliasson Sheds Light on Environmental Issues With Immersive Installations

“In Real Life” is now on view at Guggenheim Bilbao.

Known for his captivating installations and sculptures, Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson is bringing his immersive exhibition, entitled “In Real Life,” to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. First displayed at the Tate Modern in July 2019, 30 artworks created between 1990 and today bring attention to some of today’s most pressing issues such as climate change. Through materials such as moss, glacial ice, fog and light, Eliasson challenges viewers to reflect upon their understanding and perception of the physical world.

Highlights of the exhibition include Model room (2003), a display which includes 450 models, prototypes and geometric studies of Eliasson’s work with his studio team and Your imaginary future (2020), a semicircular arc mounted to a mirror which unites the actual space of the gallery with the virtual space that appears in the mirrored surface. The rest of the interactive works use light, shadow and bodily forms to explore the artist’s “deep engagement with society and the environment.”

“In Real Life” is running from now until June 21. Visit Guggenheim Bilbao’s website for more information on current and future programming.
