Kim Jones Curates Works by KAWS, Yoshitomo Nara & More for Sotheby's Contemporary Sale

The auction will kick off March 6.

This March, Kim Jones of Dior Men will serve as guest curator for Sotheby’s Contemporary Curated sale. As one of the fashion industry’s preeminent voices, Jones has selected a variety of works that reveal his discerning eye for art and design, while paying homage to his first career as a gallerist. The March sale includes pieces spanning over seven decades of art history, focusing on some of the greatest creative voices of the 20th and 21st century.

“I pulled out things I loved, and the things that spoke to me, and the things that related to what I do with my job at Dior,” Jones told VOGUE. On the “most Dior” of his selections, Jones chose works by KAWS and Raymond Pettibon — artists he has worked with before. “I’m very instinctive the way I choose stuff,” Jones continued. “I purely choose things because I love them, not because it’d be cool or anything. It’s just things that speak to me.”

Among the 250 lots are works by David Hockney, Cindy Sherman, Kerry James Marshall and more. Highlights of the sale include Yoshitomo Nara’s Fire, which is estimated to fetch up to $900,000 USD and George Condo’s The Strangers, which is estimated to sell for $700,000 USD. Other works include Donald Judd’s multi-colored wall pieces, Simone Leigh’s female sculpture and Nick Cave’s bejeweled coat.

Take a closer look at a few of Kim Jones’ picks for Sotheby’s above. Leading up to the March 6 auction, a pre-sale exhibition of the works will run from February 28 at Sotheby’s York Avenue galleries.

In other news, KAWS will release brand-new SHARE Companion vinyl figures on his website this Tuesday.
