James Evans Launches "Give up the Ghost" Solo Show in Mexico City

Large oil paintings that explore the concept of time and displacement.

New York-based artist James Evans recently set up a studio in Mexico City to create a body of intricate oil on canvas paintings that explore concepts surrounding time and displacement. These latest works raise the idea that displacement is rapidly a social and technological phenomenon rather than a geographical one. “The moments and people that define our lives are simultaneously permanent and interchangeable,” said the artist in a statement.

For his first international solo show entitled “Give up the Ghost,” Evans continues to examine the symbolism behind everyday objects that are often discarded or overlooked across his new works. For example, one of his new pieces portrays a photorealistic painting of a set of keys with the title of the work Always Losing Something featured on the face of it. Another highlight is a series of painted grocery bags containing fruits with their labels relaying text with underlying meanings such as “Swan Song” or “I Like to think it’s us.”

“Give up the Ghost” is on view during Zona Maco and Mexico City art week this February 6-7 at the address below. Get a closer look at the new works above.
