Hajime Sorayama Imagines Intimacy Between Robots at NANZUKA Tokyo
“Sex Matter” includes new paintings and sculptures by the artist.

This March, NANZUKA is presenting two concurrent shows featuring new works by acclaimed Japanese illustrator Hajime Sorayama. “Sex Matter” will take over the main gallery space, while “Trex” will open in the “2G” studio at Shibuya Parco. Well-known for his erotic portrayals of female robots, Sorayama continues to challenge political and social taboos through the expressions in his work.
For his solo exhibition entitled “Sex Matter,” Sorayama created robot works inspired by themes surrounding sex. Through these works, Sorayama emphasizes the fact that “life is born in this world through the existence of both the male and female sex” and suggests new issues of concern that lie beyond the themes of physical remodeling, AI and the post-human body. A selection of 10 paintings will be exhibited alongside new human-scale sculptures that capture this intense intimacy.
Sorayama’s second solo show, titled “Trex,” will present five new cast sculptures the artist introduced in Bangkok, Thailand back in October. Dinosaur robot paintings depicting a Tyrannosaurus rex, Stegosaurus and more will also be on display.
Take a look at select works from both of the exhibitions above. “Sex Matter” will open on March 14, while “Trex” is set to launch March 13. Both exhibitions will run until April 12.
