'Ralph Steadman: A Life in Ink' Book Highlights the Iconic British Artist's Provocative Illustrations

Including Steadman’s collaborations with Hunter S. Thompson for ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.’

Chronicle Books unveiled a new special edition book spotlighting the prolific career of the revered and provocative illustrator, Ralph Steadman. Titled Ralph Steadman: A Life in Ink, the hardcover tome consists of 336 pages featuring the UK-based artist’s career highlights and personal projects. Steadman is known for his humorous and political cartoons which depict the likes of Richard Nixon and George Bush. He developed a distinctive style portraying unruly ink splatters, ostentatious subjects and grotesque imagery.

The comprehensive monograph spotlights dozens of works from Steadman’s decades-spanning career including his collaborations with Hunter S. Thompson for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which led to the birth of Gonzo journalism alongside illustrated classics such as Alice Through the Looking Glass and original projects such as I Leonardo.

“A new book, ‘Ralph Steadman: A Life in Ink,’ reveals the U.K.-based artist as more than just a counterculture documentarian. His sketches of London street life show a knack for capturing character in a few quick, precisely chosen pen strokes…. At 84 he still relishes turning his sharp pen on contemporary politicians,” said Smithsonian Magazine in a statement regarding the new book.

Preorder a copy of Ralph Steadman: A Life in Ink now on Chronicle Books’ official website for $60 USD.
