Artists Create Solar Panel Artworks to Raise Funds for Over 4,000 Rwanda Students

Works by Underdogs artists Vhils, Wasted Rita and more.

Underdogs gallery in Lisbon, Portugal is the latest art platform to participate in the ongoing Solar Panel Art Series organized by Olafur Eliasson’s Little Sun Foundation — a non-profit organization that provides energy, humanitarian relief and improved education for those who live without energy access. The gallery enlisted its roster of international artists to create unique works directly on used solar panels. Participating artists include ±MaisMenos±, Bordalo II, Tamara Alves, Vhils and Wasted Rita.

“As COVID continues to test the resilience of socio-political foundations around the world, there has never been a more pressing moment to call for greater social and environmental justice” says Abou Aboughazala, Managing Director of The Solar Panel Art Series. Eliasson adds: ““An artwork is never just the object; it is also the experience and its contextual impact, how it is used and enjoyed, and how it raises questions and changes ways of thinking and living. The Solar Panel Art Series does exactly that, and it is a great example of how to open up the discussion about renewable energy and the unequal distribution of energy today.”

The Underdogs edition will coincide with an online exhibition to help raise funds for the “Solar Kids School Programme” of the Little Sun Foundation. The project aims to provide clear, safe and sustainable light in the form of solar lamps to over 4,000 school children and their teachers in Rwanda.

View the solar panel artworks above and then head to Underdogs’ website to learn more. The exhibition can be viewed online until November 13.
