Jean Jullien Covers Entire Room With Playful Paintings and Illustrations in France

As part of a new installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lyon.

Acclaimed French painter and illustrator, Jean Jullien, recently unveiled a new installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lyon in France. Titled Digressions pariétales, the site-specific work sees the artist utilizing an entire room as his canvas to create playful black-and-white illustrations alongside vivid figurative paintings.

“The work is an interrogation of tourism and movement, exploring the artist’s own relationship with landscape and leisure through painting and drawing. The paintings themselves serve as serene, contemplative visuals — a romantic take on the relationship between humans and their surroundings,” as per statement by the artist’s studio. The paintings are surrounded by black drawings and texts that serve as an open sketchbook or “a framework by which the artist can question the ramifications of one’s relationship to nature — our fascination with it and our desire to conquer and mark it.”

Digressions pariétales has been created as part of the group show “Comme un parfum d’aventure,” which includes the works of Marina Abramović, Guillaume Bijl, Jean Dubuffet, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet, Yoko Ono, among many others. Head to MAC Lyon’s website to learn more. The installation is on view until January 3, 2021.
