TASCHEN to Reissue Legendary Helmut Newton Monograph 'SUMO'

Complete with a Philippe Starck-designed bookstand.

Publishing house TASCHEN has announced plans to mark the 100th anniversary of Helmut Newton‘s birth by releasing a new version of SUMO. The book, which first arrived in 1999, celebrates the legendary photographers work with more than 400 images across its pages.

At the time of its first release, SUMO boke records due to its weight and dimensions — which gave the tome its name — while it quickly sold out and attracted high resale prices. For the new version, TASCHEN has shrunk the book to create Baby SUMO, which is exactly have the size of the 1999 original. As well as the book itself, Baby SUMO will release with a bookstand designed by Philippe Starck and a booklet documenting how it was made.

Over the course of his life, Newton became one of the most famous and important photographers in the world. Baby SUMO features some of his most notable works, including portraits taken for Vogue over his long career, as well as personal essays written by Newton. The 2020 version of the book has been edited and revised by Newton’s wife, June Newton.

Take a look at Baby SUMO in the gallery above. The book is limited to just 10,000 copies and will be priced at £1,000 GBP or $1,500 USD. Baby SUMO will release through the TASCHEN web store on October 31, which would have been Newton’s 100th birthday.
