snipe1 Fuses Graffiti With Japanese Folklore at First-Ever Solo Exhibition in US

On view at LA’s Avenue des Arts next month.

After being banned from entering the United States 20 years ago, snipe1 is now holding his first solo exhibition in the US at Los Angeles’ Avenue des Arts. “METAZEALOT” presents 16 paintings that call upon viewers to push the limits and show up to an exhibit that the artist himself cannot attend.

Using only spray paint for his pieces, snipe1’s style draws influence from graffiti, anime and traditional Japanese paintings from the Edo period. His pieces feature yokai, or supernatural monsters and spirits, tagging trains and streets, highlighting his ability to fuse Japanese folklore with the realities of today’s graffiti artists. Elsewhere, snipe1 brings an edge of “dirtiness” to street culture by contrasting cute characters and bright colors with grunge spray methods.

Take a look inside “METAZEALOT” in the gallery above. The exhibition will run from February 1 to 29.

Elsewhere in art, MIMA museum will launch a group exhibition featuring the works of Steve Harrington, Parra and more.
