Serving the People Explores Forms of Digital Escapism in Upcoming LA Exhibition

The non-profit initiative founded by Lucien Smith will host its first physical show called “Fear Eats The Soil.”

Following a number of digital group shows, Lucien Smith’s non-profit creative initiative Serving The People (STP) is now planning to launch their first physical exhibition during Frieze LA 2020. Entitled “Fear Eats the Soil,” the forthcoming presentation will spotlight Smith’s new body of work that explores forms of escapism using modern-day devices and how new technology would have influenced the Impressionist movement through a series of diverse visuals. The title of the show refers to Smith’s anonymous social media handle which the artist had for years.

“Navigating through digital media as a resource I began noticing a subconscious narrative beginning to form. Images allow us to disembark from the confines of our immediate surroundings like the Impressionists once would,” said Smith in a statement. “Although instead of physically embarking on a journey, we embrace an abundant amount of imagery through the gaze of others.”

The exhibition will take place at Melet DTLA in the Arts District, running through February 12-17. On February 13, STP will host a short film festival with works by interdisciplinary artists spanning Casper Telly, Aisha Amin, among others.

In other shows, Tyrrell Winston will launch his first-ever solo exhibition in America.
