Jonathan Chapline Reimagines Famous Paintings Using 3D Rendering

Bridging physical and digital realms.

Brooklyn-based artist Jonathan Chapline is holding his first solo exhibition in Asia, entitled “Hunter Gatherer,” at Tokyo’s NANZUKA gallery. Recognized for his 3D-like scenes generated in advance using a computer program, Chapline’s otherworldly paintings blur the boundaries between the physical and digital realms. From new paintings to three-dimensional works, Chapline reinterprets the masterpieces of renowned artists for his latest exhibition.

As part of a digital generation, Chapline “is able to use a mouse as one would do so a pencil.” His works are rendered and painted; flat and sculptural. Highlights of the exhibition include his interpretations of Cézanne’s painting The Bathers, Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Michelangelo’s Battle of Cascina. With digital technology, the bold colors and flat surfaces bring a new type of dynamism to his work and showcase his ability to control physical space through the interaction of 2D and 3D.

Check out select works from “Hunter Gatherer” in the slideshow above. The exhibition will be open to the public from January 31 to March 1.

Elsewhere in art, London’s Royal Academy of Arts is showcasing over 300 works on paper by Picasso in its “Picasso and Paper” exhibition.
