Gagosian Gallery Honors Ceramicist John Mason With New Exhibition

“Geometric Force” is on view until February 15.

The late ceramicist John Mason is the focus of Gagosian‘s latest exhibition. “Geometric Force” opened yesterday at Gagosian’s Park & 75 gallery and showcases Mason’s revolutationary work in sculpture and ceramics. Mason was born in 1927 in Nebraska and became a leading figure in sculpture in the 1950s thanks to his ambitious, abstract works.

Based in Los Angeles, Mason introduced new industrial techniques to clay to push the form forward, completing works of up to six feet in height. He worked closely with the ceramicist Peter Voulkos and regularly showed his work in Los Angeles and throughout the United States.

His work saw a resurgance in recent years thanks to showings at the Getty Center the Whitney Biennial. Contemporary artists such as Sterling Ruby and Jonas Wood, among others, have cited him as an influence. The new Gagosian show will include pieces from his early career up until his death in 2019 at the age of 91.

“Geometric Force” is on view at Gagosian from January 10 to February 15. For more exhibitions, read about Martin Laforêt’s upcoming show at London’s Carpenters Workshop Gallery.
