Galerie Perrotin Launches Maurizio Cattelan "Comedian" Banana T-Shirt

Nodding to one of 2019’s most viral art moments while raising funds for Feeding South Florida.

Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan provided one of the biggest art moments of 2019 with his satyrical “Comedian” piece, a single banana duct taped to a white wall that sold for $120,000 USD at Galerie Perrotin‘s Art Basel Miami installation. It spawned memes, garnered discussion about what “art” truly was, and was even devoured by a New York-based comedian named David Datuna before being quickly replaced. Now, Perrotin and Cattelan and continuing the fruitful festivities with a limited-edition “Comedian” T-shirt.

Much like the artwork itself, the design is simple, with a digitally printed graphic of a ripe duct-taped banana on its front. The back features a black “Comedian, Maurizio Cattelan — Perrotin” wordmark, and the tee itself is made of 100% cotton. Although the cheeky design is decidedly light-hearted, the use of the proceeds it generates is serious: they’ll benefit Feeding South Florida, a hunger-relief organization serving Palm Beach, Broward, Miami- Dade, & Monroe Counties.

Priced at €22.50 (approximately $25 USD), the tee retails for $119,975 USD less than its edible counterpart, and is available via Perrotin’s New York outpost at 130 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. If you’re not based in the Big Apple, you can also snag the tee from Perrotin’s webstore, where it’ll start shipping during the first week of February.

Elsewhere, Pigalle and Nike have debuted a vibrant new basketball court in the heart of Paris.
