Anthony Lister & Brian Leo Explore Personal Identity, Pop Culture & More in Tokyo Exhibition

Featuring paintings of superheroes.

Tokyo’s Megumi Ogita Gallery is holding a two-person exhibition, entitled “Rude Words,” featuring new works by Anthony Lister and Brian Leo. Through their distinct processes and subject matters, each artist points out the disconnect in today’s society related to mass media, identity and culture.

“Rude Words” will feature brightly colored paintings of superheroes from Lister’s Contemporary Mythology Series, as well as 100 small paintings that depict personal experiences, contemplations of globalization and social commentary by Leo. With a style informed by pop art and street art, Lister merges “high” and “low” cultural imagery to create new narratives situated within a personal context. “The first rule of painting is to take everyone else out of the equation,” he has said. “I am the viewer, so I don’t underestimate my viewers.”

Take a closer look at Lister’s work in the gallery above. “Rude Words” will launch February 7 and run until February 22.

For more art in Tokyo, NANZUKA gallery will showcase Jonathan Chapline’s 3D-rendered paintings later this month.
