Taku Obata Brings Towering B-Boy Wooden Sculptures to artKYOTO Fair

Japanese artist Taku Obata is well-known for creating life-sized sculptures of geometric subjects that glean inspiration from hip-hop and breakdance cultures. International dealer Over The Influence is currently showcasing new works by Obata at the first-ever artKYOTO fair in Kyoto, Japan. Taking place at the world heritage site, Nijō Castle, the gallery is one of 150 participants at the sprawling installment that is currently running until September 9.
Obata recently took to Instagram to unveil two new sculptures at Over The Influence’s booth at the fair. The first figure portrays a b-boy clad in a white down jacket with a protruding set of goggles. The other work contrasts the former with a quilted long-coat and its arms folded while adorning a flapped cap. Both pieces are made of wood.
“Deeply connected to B-Boy culture in Japan, Obata captures, exaggerates and deforms the human body in dancing movement, emphasizing the bodies’ shapes, poses, and physiques, while eliminating the emotional or inner elements of the figures,” said the gallery in a statement.
