Julia Wachtel Comments on the Role of Imagery at Super Dakota

With themes ranging from global warming to consumerism.

Artist Julia Wachtel‘s first solo exhibition in Belgium is currently on view at gallery Super Dakota. Fittingly called “Tears, Drips and Pixels,” the exhibition features a selection of seven new paintings that aim to encourage viewers to reevaluate their motives for looking at images. The colorful show will take up an entire two floors of the gallery space.

Since the ’80s, Wachtel has been combining iconic imagery from posters and greeting cards into unique oil and acrylic paintings that aim to examine the conditions of the visual-focused world in which we live in. The artist’s more recent work explores the significance of imagery in modern society by focusing on darker themes around politics, celebrity culture, the environment and technology. The most apparent theme in the works on display at Super Dakota is global warming, with the series depicting various environmentally-focused scenes from sick flowers to igloos. Wachtel’s dark motifs are juxtaposed with bright colors and nostalgic items like Jolly Rancher wrappers that carry a double meaning within her works.

“Tears, Drips and Pixels” will be on display at Super Dakota in Brussels at the below address until October 20.
