NANZUKA Will Take over Jeffrey Deitch Gallery for "Tokyo Pop Underground" Exhibit
Showcasing works by acclaimed Japanese artists including Hajime Sorayama, Haroshi, and more.
Rising art dealer Shinji Nanzuka of NANZUKA gallery in Tokyo will launch a momentous group exhibition at Jeffrey Deitch’s New York City outpost this fall. Entitled “Tokyo Pop Underground,” the group presentation will spotlight original artworks made by the dynamic artists under the Japanese gallery’s roster. Highlights include a collage piece made of recycled skateboard decks by Haroshi, psychedelic post-war paintings by Keiichi Tanaami, and ‘Sexy Robot’ sculptures by Hajime Sorayama. Altogether, the participating artists will showcase works that shed light on the progressive artistic approaches that defined the Post-War, Modern and Contemporary Art movements in Japan.
“The artists in ‘Tokyo Pop Underground’ reflect the strains in contemporary Japanese culture as it rebuilt itself after the ruins of war and confronts numerous natural disasters,” as per a press statement. “Their work reflects what Nanzuka describes as ‘the crazy cross-cultural exchange’ between the West, the East, and the Far East, shaping a new international artistic language.”
