Julia Chiang to Launch Abstract Paintings & Ceramics at NANZUKA Tokyo

Showcasing a selection of her new works.

Brooklyn-based artist Julia Chiang will host a solo exhibition titled “Pump and Bump” at NANZUKA gallery in Tokyo. The show marks her second presentation with the gallery since 2013 when she exhibited “Coming Together, Coming Apart.” This time, the artist introduces a new selection of works that center on abstract paintings and ceramics.

While known for her works with text and repeating patterns, Chiang’s new exhibition showcases colorful petal-shaped forms that are reminiscent of the patterns of living creatures or maps and diagrams. When the patterns are multiplied, the abstract images act as metaphors for outer space, life inside the womb and female embodiment. While there is a high level of precision in attempting to produce a planned sense of regularity by hand, the artist’s fluid shapes that seem to pulse with life and dynamism seem more like organic parts of nature rather than a result of mechanical production. The petal-shaped forms that spread across Chiang’s wood panels are also found on a variety of ceramics, titled ‘A Little Bit of You, A Little Bit of Her.’

Take a look at some of the works from Julia Chiang’s exhibition in Tokyo in the gallery above. “Pump and Bump” will be open to the public from September 7 to October 5 at NANZUKA Gallery.
