Beyoncé's Iconic 'Vogue' Portrait to Be Displayed at Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery

Shot by Tyler Mitchell for the magazine’s September 2018 issue.

One of Tyler Mitchell’s Vogue portraits of Beyoncé will be included in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection. Originally appearing as part of the singer’s September 2018 cover, this issue solidified Mitchell as the first African-American photographer to shoot an American Vogue cover along with being one of the youngest at only 23.

Mitchell announced the news via Twitter, saying, “A year ago today we broke the flood gates open, now I’m glad to share this picture is being acquired into the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s permanent collection.”

The National Portrait Gallery confirmed the image’s acquisition and is currently being processed for inclusion. Leslie Ureña, the gallery’s Associate Curator of Photographs, revealed that they were “delighted to acquire this magnificent portrait of Beyoncé.” An official reveal date has yet to be announced.
