Shohei Otomo's Striking Ballpoint Pen Artwork Inspires a New Print Release

Ahead of the Japanese artist’s upcoming solo show entitled “REIWA.”

Japanese artist Shohei Otomo is recognized for his hyperrealistic ink drawings made using ballpoint pens. Most notably, Otomo is the son of legendary illustrator, Katsuhiro Otomo who created the cult manga series AKIRA. Continuing to make a name for himself in the fine contemporary art circuit, the self-taught artist is teaming up with Melbourne-based SHDW.gallery for a limited edition print release featuring an original artwork entitled Molotov Sake.

Releasing in an edition of 75, the artwork portrays a helmet-clad subject igniting a ceramic sake container that references the incendiary device, the Molotov cocktail. Sized at 15 x 11.2 inches, each print arrives hand-signed, numbered, and printed on archival 285gsm platinum etching paper with archival ink.

Purchase a print now at SHDW.gallery’s website for $150 AUD (approx. $104 USD). Otomo will also launch a solo exhibition with the gallery on August 16 entitled “REIWA.” Stay tuned for more details.

In other art releases, Steven Harrington joined forces with ICECREAM on a collaborative sculpture edition entitled Cosmic Cone.
