A Museum Dedicated to Posters Is Opening in NYC

Poster House opens its doors this summer.

From a spy-themed museum to a museum billed as the smallest in the world, New York is no stranger to institutions with niche collections. In June, the city will have another unique museum opening in art-rich Chelsea, which focuses entirely on the history of posters. Poster House explores the democracy, mass communication and intersection between art and commerce that posters have provided throughout history.

As the medium has been able to shape society–ranging from grassroots movements to clever advertisements–the Poster House aims to host exhibitions surrounding the history, design, and cultural context of posters from around the world.

The museum’s inaugural exhibitions will include the works of Czech Art Nouveau designer Alphonse Mucha and Cyan–an East Berlin-based design agency founded after the fall of the wall in 1989. Poster House will also host a photo booth, digital poster wall and design games, allowing visitors to interact with posters in a new way.

Poster House is set to officially open its doors to the public on June 20, 2019, with a pre-opening community day on June 1.
