Derrick Adams' New Abstract Portraits Spotlight Everyday Lives of Black Community

As part of an upcoming solo show titled “The Ins and Outs: Figures in the Urban Landscape.”

Brooklyn-based artist Derrick Adams is widely-known for his vivid paintings that merge the genres of cubism, abstraction, and figuration. With his multi-genre artworks, Adams predominantly raises issues within the collective Black community. The artist will soon launch a new body of colorful portrait compositions as part of an upcoming exhibition at the Rhona Hoffman Gallery in Chicago. Entitled “The Ins and Outs: Figures in the Urban Landscape,” the presentation marks the gallery’s third solo show with Adams.

“Speaking to a legacy of perseverance in the Black community, Adams’ new paintings unfold the twists and turns, joys and struggles of navigating life in an urban context,” said the gallery in a press statement. “With this work, Adams continues his ongoing project of creating space to imagine alternative narratives; he seeks to empower his viewers with fulfillment and dignity, proposing that awareness of one’s own cultural capital can be foundational to Black autonomy.”

The exhibition will run through May 31 – July 6, visit Rhona Hoffman Gallery’s website to learn more.

In other notable presentations, acclaimed British artist Paul Insect will soon launch a new solo exhibition with Allouche Gallery in Paris called “There’s More Upstairs.”
