Exclusive Look Inside Tom Sachs' Major "Tea Ceremony" Exhibition

Taking place inside the sleek Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery.

Tom Sachs recently launched one of his largest “Tea Ceremony” presentations that is currently taking place inside the premier Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in Japan. Although Sachs is not a seasoned practitioner of the ancient ritual as he revealed in our exclusive interview, the American artist has spent more than 20 years studying the complex, traditional practice.

At the launch of the exhibition, the artist hosted public “Tea Ceremony” demonstrations. For the show, Sachs presents original works made this year including his Comin’ Home, McDonald’s, Untitled, and Tres Genereaciones pieces on canvas. The centerpiece of the show is a sculptural pond with live koi fish swimming inside of it.

“This is our fourth exhibition of the ‘Tea Ceremony.’ It’s a great honor to be invited here and there will be a bunch of new work at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. It’s a prime spot in Shinjuku,” Sachs told HYPEBEAST. “It’s big and there’s a lot of care to the environment. I’m working with a great art production team called Tokyo Studio that’s helping us install and build a koi pond.”

Tour the exhibition above and then head over to Tom Sachs’ website to view more projects. “Tea Ceremony” at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery will be open to the public until June 23.

In other international exhibitions, StolenSpace Gallery in London will launch a solo exhibition with acclaimed Spanish artist, Ricardo Cavolo.
