Frieze Sculpture Finally Makes Its Way Stateside at Rockefeller Center
To be held annually at the historic New York City complex.
Frieze New York just launched its first-ever Frieze Sculpture installment stateside, showcasing a selection of 20 public works by international artists at Rockefeller Center. Made in partnership with Tishman Speyer, the art fair hopes the annual event at the historic NYC complex will have resounding success as its more established London counterpart at Regent’s Park.
The monthlong presentation was curated by Brett Littman, who is the director of the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum in Long Island City. Collectively, the sprawling outdoor presentation features small- to large-scale pieces by Jaume Plensa, Kiki Smith, Hank Willis Thomas, Nick Cave, Joan Miro, Sarah Sze, among other leading artists. Highlights include Thomas’s Saver and Daisy (Navel) (2018) sculptures that are the only interactive pieces on display, Miro’s Porte II (1974) bronze artwork, and Plensa’s massive Behind the Walls (2019) sculptural head that stands nearly 28 feet high.
