Mario Ayala Champions Latinx Identity in Detailed Paintings for Stems Gallery Show

Entitled “Shooby Doo Lang Doo Lang Dong.”

Mario Ayala is an artist based in Los Angeles who creates vivid figurative paintings using acrylic and airbrush. In his oeuvre, Ayala sheds light on the cultural attitudes, expressions, and symbology of Latinx identity. The artist is currently showcasing a new body of work at Brussels’ Stems Gallery as part of an exhibition entitled “Shooby Doo Lang Doo Lang Dong.”

“The techniques and symbology seen in the signage and advertising of Los Angeles’s landscape, and the applied arts employed in auto customization and Lowrider/tattoo subcultures appear, recontextualized, in Ayala’s canvases as he investigates the practical and social roles they play culturally, politically, and historically,” said the gallery in a statement.

Check out the installation views above and then visit Stems Gallery’s website for further information. The exhibition is on view until April 1, 2020.
