Doug Aitken Displays Color-Changing Sculptures in "Return to the Real" Exhibition

On view at Victoria Miro’s London gallery.

American artist Doug Aitken is widely known for his interactive sculptures of human figures and large-scale installations of artificial landscapes. Aitken’s new dynamic body of work is on show at Victoria Miro’s London gallery as part of an exhibition titled “Return to the Real.” Sculptural figures pulsate in varying colors according to ambient soundscapes to evoke a “portrait of the present” or the “near future,” as per a statement. In another room, Aitken presents ‘All Doors Open’ — an installation that reflects the everyday mundane and stars a luminescent female subject slouched over a table reaching for her phone.

“Much of the way we’ve seen art in the past is to look for it to be solid – to look for an image on the wall of something that we can view and judge and accept or reject,” Aitken told Dezeen. “I wanted to create a very de-material exhibition, one that was very liquid and fluid.”

Tour “Return to the Real” above and then visit Victoria Miro’s website to learn more. The show is on view until December 20, 2019.
