Raymond Pettibon Displays Clusters of New & Iconic Drawings at David Zwirner Paris

As part of a solo exhibition entitled “Frenchette.”

David Zwirner recently opened the doors to its Paris location. Kicking off its programs is the inaugural exhibition “Frenchette” that features both new and archival artworks by iconic artist and illustrator, Raymond Pettibon. These pieces are installed in clusters across the exhibition rooms of the new space. This show marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Paris since 1995.

Highlighted works in the presentation encompass a collection of gestural portraits displayed on one wall, naturalist paintings of West Coast surf culture portraying his fictional female surfer Gidget, as well as Pettibon’s globe drawings that feature dynamic swirls of vivid tones. Across his compositions are intuitively placed text and phrases including a quote from influential British author Henry James observed in one work: “It presses with every throb of consciousness.”

“Intermixing image and text, his drawings engage the visual rhetorics of pop and commercial culture while incorporating language from mass media as well as classic texts by writers such as William Blake, Marcel Proust, John Ruskin, and Walt Whitman,” said the gallery in a statement.

Frenchette” is on view at David Zwirner’s Paris location until November 23.

In other Paris presentations, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise recently took over Galerie Patrick Seguin’s space for a dynamic group exhibition that challenges the purpose of household objects.
