The MoMA Debuts Its $450 Million USD Expansion Project

Adding 100,000 square feet for new exhibition rooms, a creativity lab and more.

Following a four-month renovation, The Museum of Modern Art will soon open the doors to its new spaces encompassing 100,000 square feet with 40,000 square feet dedicated to just exhibition rooms. The $450 million USD expansion project was spearheaded by seminal architects Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler. In addition to the gallery spaces, the renovation includes a creativity lab, a sprawling MoMA Design Store with exclusive products below the lobby, an expanded ground floor, a new dining location called The Carroll and Milton Petrie Terrace Café and re-installations for the galleries on the second, fourth, and fifth floors.

The MoMA will also begin to pair pieces from its permanent collection with unfamiliar works by emerging artists. For example, visitors can expect historical pieces such as Vincent van Gogh’s ‘The Starry Night’ beside more contemporary artworks. Works will be rotated on a six-month basis and will “constantly renew the presentation,” as per a statement by the MoMA.

Included in the public opening on October 21 are inaugural exhibitions such as “Sur Moderno: Journeys of Abstraction” that spotlights a significant collection of abstract and concrete art from Latin America donated to the museum by the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros. Altogether, MoMA looks to shine a light on underrepresented artists of various ethnic backgrounds for its future programming.

Head to MoMA’s website to view the complete list of inaugural shows and then tour the new spaces above. In case you missed it, the MoMA Design Store unveiled its full FW19 collection that includes collaborations with Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, and more.
