A Look Inside MR's New Solo Show at Perrotin Hong Kong

“People misunderstand me and the contents of my paintings.”

Japanese artist and Kaikai Kiki affiliate, MR, recently launched a new solo exhibition at Perrotin’s Hong Kong Space. The extensive showcase displays a new range of fantastical paintings filled with MR’s eccentric, anime-inspired visuals. The artist’s unrestrained imagination, largely inhabited by two-dimensional subjects and Japanese-style street art, invade each canvas to form unique and unruly compositions. Moreover, the artist’s recent experimentation of processing images with computers to create low-tech imagery is found in the works as well.

The full title of the show is “People misunderstand me and the contents of my paintings. They just think they are nostalgic, cute, and look like Japanese anime. That may be true, but really, I paint daily in order to escape the devil that haunts my soul. The said devil also resides in my blood, and I cannot escape from it no matter how I wish. So I paint in resignation.”
