Ai Weiwei Designs United Talent Agency's New Artist Space

A former diamond-tooling factory gets remodeled.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that artist and activist Ai Weiwei would release a series of projects in Los Angeles in the fall. One of those endeavors included creating a new space for artists, helmed by United Talent Agency. Thanks to Designboom, we now get a first look at the recently-opened 4,000 square foot exhibition space in Beverly Hills.

Ai was reportedly drawn to the project after seeing the blank concrete facade of the former diamond-tooling facility. The exposed weathered wooden beams make for an interesting lighting structure and construction along the ceiling, complemented by the light gray polished concrete floors. The stark white walls with hints of natural sunlight provide the perfect backdrop for the space’s inaugural exhibition, One Shot, featuring color field painters Morris Louis, Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, Sam Gilliam and Jules Olitski.

Ai is scheduled to have his first solo exhibition in Los Angeles at the venue in October.
