This Whale Installation Is Made of 10,000 Pounds of Ocean Plastic Waste
Situated in Belgium’s Bruges canal.

Brooklyn-based architecture and design firm StudioKCA created a monumental installation for the Bruges Triennial 2018 in Belgium. Entitled Skyscraper (the Bruges Whale), the massive whale installation was made using 10,000 pounds of plastic waste found from the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. The studio collaborated with the Hawaii Wildlife Fund to gather the plastic used in the installation over the span of four months.
“Pound for pound, there is more plastic waste from our cities swimming in the ocean than there are whales,” the Studio expressed in a statement. “A whale, breaching from the water, is the first ‘skyscraper of the sea,’ and as the largest mammal in the water, it felt like the right form for our piece to take in order to show the scope and scale of the problem.”
Skyscraper is on view at the Bruges canal near the Jan Van Eyck statue until September 16. Head over to StudioKCA’s website to learn more and let us know your thoughts below.
